How to Use This BMI Calculator

  1. Pick your units. Use metric (cm/kg) or imperial (ft/lb) — whichever you know.
  2. Enter height and weight. Then click the Calculate My BMI button.
  3. Read your result. The number, color-coded category, and your personal healthy weight range appear below the button.

The BMI Formula

Body Mass Index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2

Example: a person who is 170 cm tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2. This is the standard formula used by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC.

What Your BMI Result Means

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight: you may need to gain weight. Talk to a healthcare provider or dietitian about a safe plan.
  • 18.5–24.9 — Healthy weight: keep up the good habits — balanced eating and regular movement.
  • 25–29.9 — Overweight: small, steady changes (daily walks, portion awareness) move this number down.
  • 30 and above — Obese: consider working with a professional on a structured plan; even a 5–10% weight loss brings real health benefits.

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Very muscular people, pregnant women, and older adults with low muscle mass can get misleading results — waist measurement and body-fat percentage add useful context.

BMI Calculator FAQs

What is a good BMI for adults?

For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy by the WHO and CDC. The same cutoffs apply to men and women.

Is BMI accurate for muscular or athletic people?

Not always. Muscle is denser than fat, so athletes can score "overweight" while being very lean. If you lift regularly, pair BMI with waist circumference or body-fat estimates.

Does BMI work for teenagers and children?

Children and teens use BMI-for-age percentiles rather than adult cutoffs, because healthy BMI changes as they grow. This calculator uses adult cutoffs.

How often should I check my BMI?

Once a month is plenty. Weight fluctuates daily with water and food, so monthly checks show the real trend without the noise.
